Searching in the Sound Toll Registers online

This is the first version of the search screen
of the Sound Toll Registers online (STR-online).

The number of available years will gradually increase. By 2013 all data will be available here. Every time that years will be added we shall make an announcement on this site. To be informed of these messages you may subscribe to RSS-feeds.

You may search for personal names, geographical names and commodity names. All names are recorded in the spelling of the original Sound Toll registers. The names have not been standardized. We intend to standardize the data in a later stage.

The Danish alphabet
The Danish alphabet The Danish alphabet has 29 letters. Next to the 26 characters that we know in Holland, the Danish language has the symbols å, æ, and ø. The letter "W" is only used in foreign words. The letter "IJ" is not used in Danish.

Searching for personal names
In the database we have entered the names of the shipmasters who declared their ships and cargoes in Elsinore. You may search for first names, patronymics and surnames. Patronymics have been recorded under ‘patronymic’ when the complete name includes a surname and under ‘surname’ when that is not the case.

Searching for geographical names
You may search for the domicile of the shipmaster and the ports of departure and destination of the ship.

Searching for cargoes
You may search for the Danish names of the transported commodities. When you e.g. search for ‘Rug’ you will obtain a list of the passages of the ships that carried rye.
Click ‘here’ for a provisional list with the translations of the commodity names in English, Dutch, Frisian and French.

Wildcards
For search actions you may use wildcards; here the wildcard is a ‘star’: *

Examples
While searching for geographical names the pattern w*r*m finds all variants of Workum, like Worckem, but also the name Werdom.

Searching on shipmasters names is in the complete name. This name has the following structure: <
preposition>

The use of one or more spaces in the searchpattern influences the outcome of the search:
*wend* finds all shipmasters with ‘wend’ anywhere in the name, like Swend Andersen. * wend* (i.e. *wend*) finds only those shipmasters where one of the nameparts begins with ‘wend’, like Jacob Wendelius.

ATTENTION: Searching for ‘Magnus Wendell’ (one space) finds nothing; search for Magnus*Wendell or Magnus Wendell (3 spaces)

How are the results presented
In all searches you will arrive at a screen showing the alphabet. Clicking a letter brings you to a list of personal names, geographical names or commodity names.
From the list with results you can click on the black arrows right above in your screen to the previous or next passage, or go to the first or last passage.

Downloading
You will have to register before you can start downloading data, see Registration below. There are several download options.

1. All data per year or film (the data have been entered from the scanned microfilms of the original Sound Toll Registers). In that case you download successively the four tables which together make up the relational database: passages, cargoes, taxes and images. U may subsequently import these tables in a database program, such as Access.
2. All values for the Skipper, Place, Port From, Port To, Cargo and Cargo unit.

There are no copyrights on this source. We appreciate it that the source is credited in publications as www.soundtoll.nl.

We require registration because we wish to know who use this source. We aim to keep regular users informed of the latest developments.

Zoeken in de Sonttolregisters online

Dit is de eerste versie van het zoekscherm van de Sonttolregisters online (STR-online).

Het aantal beschikbare jaren zal geleidelijk groeien. Het zal tot in 2013 duren voor alle gegevens hier beschikbaar zijn. Wij zullen op deze site telkens aangeven wanneer er jaren zijn toegevoegd. Om op de hoogte te worden gehouden van deze nieuwsberichten kunt u zich abonneren op RSS-feeds.

U kunt zoeken op persoonsnamen, plaatsnamen en productnamen. Alle namen zijn opgenomen in de spelling waarin zij in de originele Sonttolregisters voorkomen. De namen zijn niet gestandaardiseerd. Het is de bedoeling de gegevens later te standaardiseren.

Het Deense alfabet
Het Deense alfabet heeft 29 letters. Naast het 26-letterige alfabet zoals we dat in Nederland kennen heeft het Deens nog de tekens å, æ, en ø. De letter "W" komt alleen voor in buitenlandse woorden. De letter "IJ" komt in het Deens niet voor.

Zoeken op persoonsnamen
In de database zijn de namen ingevoerd van de schippers die aangifte deden van hun schip en lading in Helsingør. U kunt zoeken op voornaam, patroniem en achternaam. Patroniemen zijn onder ‘patroniem’ opgenomen als de gehele naam ook een achternaam omvat en onder ‘achternaam’ als dat niet het geval is.

Zoeken op plaatsnamen
U kunt zoeken op de domicilie van de schipper en de havens van vertrek en bestemming van het schip.

Zoeken op lading
U kunt zoeken op de Deense benaming van de vervoerde producten. Zoekt u bijvoorbeeld op ‘Rug’, dan krijgt een lijst met de doorvaarten van de schepen die rogge vervoerden. Klik ‘hier’ voor een voorlopige lijst met de vertalingen van de productnamen in het Engels, Nederlands, Fries en Frans.

Wildcards
U kunt bij het zoeken gebruik maken van zgn. wildcards; de wildcard is in dit geval het sterretje: *

Voorbeelden
w*r*m levert bij plaatsnamen alle varianten op van Workum, zoals Worckem, maar ook de plaats Werdom.

Bij schippersnamen wordt in de volledige naam gezocht. Deze heeft de volgende structuur:

Door ook één of meer spaties in het patroon op te nemen ontstaan verschillende patronen: *wend* geeft alle schippers waar ergens ‘wend’ voorkomt, zoals Swend Andersen * wend* geeft alleen die schippers waarbij een van de naamdelen met ‘wend’ begint, zoals Jacob Wendelius.

LET OP: Zoeken op ‘Magnus Wendell’ (met 1 spatie) levert geen resultaat; zoek op bv. ‘Magnus* Wendell’ of ‘Magnus Wendell’(3 spaties).
 

Hoe worden de resultaten gepresenteerd
Bij alle zoekacties wordt eerst een tussenscherm met het alfabet getoond. Hieruit kunt u een letter aanklikken en vervolgens verschijnt een lijst met persoonsnamen, plaatsnamen of productsoorten.
Vanuit het detailresultaat kunt u middels de zwarte pijltjestoetsen rechtsboven in het scherm doorklikken naar de vorige en volgende doorvaart, alsmede naar de eerste en laatste doorvaart uit het zoekresultaat.

Downloaden
Voor het downloaden van gegevens is registratie vereist, zie Registratie hieronder. Bij het downloaden heeft u verschillende opties.

1. Alle gegevens per jaar of film (de gegevensinvoer heeft plaatsgevonden vanaf de gescande microfilms van de originele Sonttolregisters). In dat geval download u achtereenvolgens de vier tabellen die samen de relationele database vormen: passages, cargoes, taxes en images. U kunt deze tabellen vervolgens invoeren in een databaseprogramma, zoals Access.
2. Alle waarden voor de velden Skipper, Place, Port From, Port To, Cargo en Cargo unit.
